What the Research Says...
Research consistently upholds the following:
1. Therapy WORKS.
Therapy works better than no therapy at all. Numerous studies have proven that those people accessing therapy increase their level of functioning than 80% of those people going without it.
2. YOU - the client - are the most potent factor in therapeutic change.
Given the time and space to process your experience, to recognise your strengths and resources, you are the key to change.
3. Relationships are VERY important.
Relationships are therapeutic when that other person trusts and supports your innate ability to process your experience, harness your strengths, and fulfil your potential. If such a relationship in therapy is lacking, then a major factor for therapeutic change is absent. Time to move on!
4. The Model or Approach is NOT what matters most
In fact, what works in therapy CANNOT be reduced to ANY particular approach or model. For instance, in itself cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is no better than any other model. There's much more to therapy than this.
5. Not every therapist is right for you.
The best therapist for you will fit with YOUR view of change. Therapy is most successful once the therapist accepts and harnesses the above facts.
